Small World
This photo is from the Campbell High School Class of ’49 year book. That is dad’s signature on his photo. So why did dad sign his photo? Because I didn’t get this photo from mom, but rather from one of his classmates, and that’s where the interesting story lies.
At the recent Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department annual dinner, I was explaining to Jennifer Miller why we were out of town last month. I explained we went to visit my dad and she asked where that was. I explained San Jose, and she mentioned that her husband’s mother grew up in Campbell, her husband being John Miller, who I have attended many a fire training class with since we went through the academy together. She asked how old dad was, and when I said 73, Jennifer’s eyes lit up, because John’s mother Aubrey was also 73. I figured at that point that they must have known each other, and when John joined the conversation, he mentioned that Aubrey was interested in drama and music. At that point I knew they must have known each other. He excitedly called me later that night after talking to his mother (who lives with them). Aubrey remembered dad and said he was a very good dancer. They looked through her yearbook and found that he had signed it in several places. So that’s where this picture came from and that’s why he signed his own picture. This little event was about as weird as finding out great-grandpa is buried about 10 miles away.
