Sometime around 9:00 this morning, most of Ferndale lost power. Winds were up to category 1 hurricane levels (98 mph recorded in Eureka) so trees and even buildings were crashing down everywhere. The fire department was jumping all day, starting with a boat rescue of some stranded people. By evening the power hadn’t been restored and the prognosis wasn’t good since so many lines had come down and many areas were simply inaccessible due to the flooding and landslides. Not wanting the year to end on a sour note, Greg Ford and Jason Queen of the FVFD took it upon themselves to haul a generator up to Ferndale’s Christmas tree, and they were able to light the star and a couple of strands for at least a few hours before the rain started again. Pretty cool thing to do for the town, and everybody loved it! So that’s then end of 2005, a rather sucky year in my opinion. Let’s hope 2006 has more to offer.
