I’ve often thought it’s not fair that weeds are so ugly. Why can’t the weeds that invade your yard at least be pretty? Well, then we wouldn’t call them weeds probably. But when we had a load of manure brought in, new weeds appeared and one of them that I saw a lot was a very broadleafed plant, which I thought at first might be a potato. When we fell behind in our weeding and one bloomed, Lori mentioned how pretty this weed was. So I spent some time researching what it might be and I found out it was Jimsom Weed, or Datura stramonium, a member of the potato family.

A rather unfriendly member though as it is very poisonous we found out. We have other poisonous plants in the yard such as foxglove, but we decided we better keep pulling these for now. In reading about them I found out that they are also very bad for cattle, which makes me wonder how they showed up with the manure in the first place. The one upside is that they are one of the easier weeds to pull, but they do have a distinctive odor when you pull them by hand. Which is what we’re doing now because Lori is uncomfortable having me spray Round-up. Yeah, we don’t want anything toxic in the yard would we?
