Dave “The Bullet” Smith is still at it. Here’s the view of his landing net. He does a 180 degree somersault so he lands on his back in the net, and then hopefully he’s able to grab the net so it doesn’t launch him back out of it. He experiences 6g’s of force on the blast off, and lands 180ft away from the cannon. They are very careful to never let you look down the barrel of the cannon, so the theory among most of us watching is that he really isn’t blasted out the cannon by the powder. The boom is probably only for effect. More likely he’s using some sort of spring or bungy cord arangement to do the actual launching. I’m sure it’s all some sort of huge circus trade secret.
