Dad
Passed away at age 73 on February 13, 2005 in Campbell, California. The son of the late Warren and Arva Knowles, he leaves his loving wife of 48 years and best friend, Sharon; four loving children, daughters Melody (& Michael Hooper) and Linda Knowles, and sons Matt (& Lori Knowles) and Derek (& Jasna Knowles). He is also survived by his sister, Selma, and three grandchildren, Emily, Melissa, and Lauren.
Born December 29, 1931 in Campbell, Dan attended Campbell High School and San Jose State University. He graduated “With Great Distinction” with a BA in music. After graduation he served 2 years in the Army, spending some of that time stationed in Germany. He returned to San Jose State University for post graduate studies, and met Sharon. They were married February 3, 1957.
The newly married couple moved to Solvang where he taught high school and they started their family. A year later they moved back to San Jose and in 1960 as the family grew, they purchased the home where he spent the rest of his life.
Dan worked as a music teacher, a Fuller Brush salesperson, sold AAA insurance, and then worked as a tax preparer for GBS. He then started his own company, TaxPro, which he owned until his retirement in 2000. He was a member and past-president of the Mission Society of Enrolled Agents.
His interests included gardening, travel and photography, and ballroom dancing. He was very active in his church, and served as their soloist for several years. Being around Dan was like living in your own musical, as a tune could break out at any time. One of his favorite tunes reminds us of him who had to leave us and the love for him of those he left behind.
Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer’s gone, and all the flowers are dying
‘Tis you, ’tis you must go and I must bide.
An outdoor memorial service will be held in spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to InnVision or to Second Church of Christ, Scientist.
