Mon, Sep. 1, 2008 - Asleep at the Wheel
FVFD responded to a single vehicle crash on Main Street around 4am this morning. Lori and I were planning to get up early anyways to leave for San Jose, but this was earlier than I had wanted to get up. The driver of the car was the son of our fire chief, and he managed to hit a power pole (shearing it completely off), go up the curb and through the chain link fence before a couple of saplings saved the car from a complete and probably inverted landing in the creek below. Bad enough for the chief to have to respond to a crash involving a relative, but to add insult to injury, the next day his wife's car got totalled by a run away garbage truck.
Tue, Sep. 2, 2008 - Roof Dancing
Lori and I got up to San Francisco with just enough time to eat lunch before her appointment. We grabbed some sandwiches and then walked up to the top of Alta Park to check out the view. Down the street a crew was replacing the roof on a Tudor Revival that had a seriously steep pitch. This guy was at least four floors up and was walking the peaks like he was down on the sidewalk below. I'm not terribly afraid of heights but that would have had me pretty uncomfortable, and I don't think I would have been up there without being tied off on a rope.
Fri, Sep. 5, 2008 - Bargain Hunters
The big bargain hunters garage sale in Ferndale was held again this weekend. Since I was busy painting Lori took some stuff down to a neighbors house that's closer to town. We found out last year the crowds just don't make it out our way. A few of the bigger items I just photographed and made a flyer for. None of the big items sold, so if you're looking for a vintage commode, here it is. We bought this from a couple who sold their Victorian in San Jose about the same time we moved. They had had this piece on their porch for years, planning to use it for a bathroom remodel that never seemed to happen. We've had it sitting in our garage, for a bathroom remodel that will probably now never happen. This piece really needs a good home. 400 bucks it's yours.
Sat, Sep. 6, 2008 - Godspell
I took the production photos for Godspell tonight. I was supposed to take them a couple of weeks ago but on the day of the shoot one of the cast members ended up being a 911 call after she fainted backstage during the performance. The show did go on, and instead of showing up to take photos, I showed up as a FVFD EMT. The shoot tonight went as planned.
Thu, Sep. 11, 2008 - God's Rays Over Ferndale
I was leaving the house for a fire department meeting when I saw these beautiful God's Rays right over town. I rushed back into the house to grab a camera, snapped a couple of quick picks out the front and then showed up to the meeting a few minutes late. It would have been a good time to try using HDR but I didn't have a tripod handy.
Fri, Sep. 12, 2008 - Paint, Paint, Paint
Most recreational activities other than bocce have been postponed as I've really been trying to make some progress on the paint job. As you can see from this photo, we're finally getting out of the endless fog pattern we see for the summer. The last two weeks of September through the first two weeks of October are traditionally the best weather we get in Ferndale so I'm trying to maximize the amount I get done while it's warm and before the rains start again. I was really hoping to get the front done this year but it's starting to look like I might get it half done.
Sat, Sep. 13, 2008 - And More Paint
The right bay window is nearing completion and the scaffolding came away. Next on the list is reparing the panels under the windows. The trim that is still green isn't original. I'm guessing that after the earthquake the trim on both bay window fronts was replaced. The sides of the bays still have the original trim and I'm trying to find a stock molding that is closer to the original. I was planning to pick up some stock from San Francisco Victoriana during our last trip south but that went by the wayside when the trip was shortened due to Meg's unplanned trip to the vet. By the way, Meg's doing just fine. She was trying out her last remaining fang on my toes this morning, and as a backup she's always got those claws. Ouch.
